What is a union?

A union is group of workers who join together to defend themselves from management attacks and also push for better conditions in their workplace. This traditionally involves bargaining, industrial actions (like 'go slows', withdrawal of labour) and other shows of solidarity.

Industrial unions, like the IWW, are organized by where you work, not what your job is. Whether you're the cleaner, secretary, teacher or labourer, you can join together under one big union. You will have a much bigger voice than when organized into small, isolated groups. The motto being 'An injury to one is an injury to all!'

Why have a union?

Individuals can do little by themselves and are likely to be sacked if they raise a lone voice in protest. By joining together workers are far more powerful when confronting the boss about any workplace problem, no matter how big or small. The more you can unite a workforce divided by management, the stronger you are against their control.

Why the IWW?

The IWW differs from other unions. We are a grassroots and democratic union seeking to organize all workers in all workplaces in all countries into One Big Union.

We are NOT:
  • full of stifling bureaucracy or linked to any political party or group
  • lead by fat cat salary earners who can do sell-out deals with bosses behind your back
  • people who divide workers in their workplaces
  • going to try and sell you services life insurance or credit cards

We ARE:
  • lead by the members - we are the ones who make the decisions and we have the final say
  • for uniting all workers across all departments and all trades into one strong union
  • able to offer practical help and advice on how you can empower yourself within your workplace
  • a union which supports and is in solidarity with all its members
LOW DUES! Dues are paid according to a sliding scale, with low paid or unemployed members paying only £1 a month.

Who is the IWW for?

We are for ALL workers who do not have the power to hire or fire. Whether you earn a living by using your hands or brain, you are welcome to join. The IWW can be used to unite all workers of all trades within the same workplace.

We also welcome the input of retired workers, workers in training (students), unemployed workers and home workers.

Can the IWW help improve my work situation?

That depends on you. The IWW does not provide an all knowing leadership or hefty treasury to fight your battles for you.

However, if you are willing to organize where you work by talking with your colleagues about the issues that matter to them, then you can count on IWW members' support, advice and solidarity. Whether your battle is small (eg better facilities in staff rooms) or large (eg contract or health & safety issues), we can guide you in winning your fight effectively.

The IWW aims to see production and distribution managed by the whole of society. By joining together now, WE can win full control of what OUR labour produces. The days of workers slaving away to fill someone else's pockets can be a thing of the past.
